Remodeling

When we bought the Schloss in 2012, it was practically uninhabitable. There was electricity available in a few places in the building, but no water, as all the pipes had frozen. However, there was a water connection in the basement. Many spaces on the ground floor were dirty and in poor condition, with wallpaper falling down and plaster crumbling due to moisture. The spaces on the first floor were relatively clean.

The first time I drove to Gröbitz, I had an old shower cabin, a water heater, a garden hose (for the water supply), a chair, and an air mattress in the back of my van. With these, I set up a makeshift living space on the first floor, in the former rehearsal room of the men’s choir (now apartment 11). A small coal stove was already there. It was November 2012, and it was quite cold.

I had planned to renovate the entire Schloss in about two years. It ultimately took 11 years. A lot of work has been done, but it was worth it. On the following pages, you will find a summary of what happened each year.
